Specialized Tobacco Cessation Programs for Colorado Pharmacists

Pharmacists have long been recognized as key community partners to address nicotine addiction. Their presence in communities across the country make them ideal “sentinel sites,” able to detect changes in consumer needs well before conventional surveillance systems. They are among the most trusted professionals in any industry, making them ideal sources of health guidance. In alignment with our person-centered health neighborhood approach, we work to develop robust partnerships between public health organizations and community pharmacists.

In 2018, in collaboration with the Skaggs School of Pharmacy and the Colorado Pharmacists Society, we designed and delivered an online training program that Colorado pharmacists can use to become qualified prescribers of FDA-approved smoking cessation medications. In 2020, we partnered with Skaggs School of Pharmacy and with Tri-County Public Health to design and develop a training for Colorado pharmacists so they can design educational and counseling interventions using the Appointment-Based Model.
